Primary School English Tuition

Inspiring Empathetic Communicators & Creative Inquirers

Our Primary English Tuition Curriculum

The Edu Experience’s English Exposure coursework aims to help children master grammatical concepts, expand their vocabulary banks, and refine their writing skills. We offer English Primary School Tuition to students from Primary 1-6. Students are exposed to real-world issues and themes and take part in activities (such as speech, drama, and debate) that aim to shape them into confident speakers and writers. It is essential to cement a strong foundation in the English language as it is the main avenue of communication in Singapore. Our coursework covers the following:

1. Examination preparation

At The Edu Experience, our English Tuition Curriculum effectively prepares students with worksheets and activities for examinations. Students practise a wide variety of grammar concepts and learn new vocabulary on a weekly basis. They also learn how to tackle tricky comprehension questions and how to write masterful compositions.

2. Deliberation of real-world issues and themes

Our English Tuition Curriculum exposes children to real-world issues and themes through relevant news articles and composition topics. International perspectives can help our students broaden their worldviews and connect to real-world problems. As they advance to upper primary English, tougher concepts and topics will be introduced to help them become critical thinkers and develop a sense of social responsibility.

3. Grammar studies and mastery

Our students learn and practise a wide variety of grammar concepts on a weekly basis. They are exposed to different question types and are also given application activities that help them in cementing their knowledge.

4. Vocabulary building

English is a challenging and complex language with an extensive vocabulary that confuses even native speakers. Through interactive activities and practices catered to different primary levels, our students at The Edu Experience are exposed to new words, phrases and expressions each session. Our students expand their vocabulary banks effectively and retain knowledge by using the vocabulary learnt in application exercises.

5. Comprehension skills

The ability to understand a passage and make inferences is key to scoring well in examinations. Our students learn comprehension strategies which help them process text at our English Tuition Curriculum. This is fundamental to language fluency and not only helps students enjoy reading but also increases the effectiveness of reading. With most primary level examinations being conducted in English, good comprehension skills are crucial as they enable a child to understand what is being asked and how to accurately answer the question.

6. Creative writing

Writing is probably the most difficult skill to master for any language. It is not uncommon for students to shy away from writing as they find it too laborious, difficult, and time consuming. At The Edu Experience, we aim to change that. With interesting and creative writing activities, our specialised creative writing classes will strengthen a child’s understanding and application of the narrative arch and arm them with an array of techniques that will bring their stories to life. Through our English Tuition classes, students will learn the ropes of writing, from the development of the plot to the generation of ideas. Examples of different narrative styles will be shared with close analysis on plot structure and development thus exposing them to how good writers provide the setting, develop characters, and introduce conflict in their stories. Furthermore, students will be introduced to advanced writing skills such as Show, Don’t Tell, Using the 5 Senses and more.

7. Debate and public speaking skills

Primary school students in Singapore will likely experience debates and public speaking at least once throughout their primary school years, more if they are in English, Drama, or Debate clubs which require public speaking skills. At The Edu Experience, our students develop and improve their oracy skills through fun debates and class presentations which also serves as practice for formal school presentations, which is mandated in Singapore’s education. They build confidence in a safe space and our teachers guide them through proper pronunciation, fluency and expression.

8. Independent and group-learning participation skills

Our English Tuition lessons encourage both independent learning and teamwork. Collaborative learning helps children develop the motivation to help their peers and the responsibility to be accountable to their group and do their best. On the other hand, independent learning allows students to develop the creativity to solve problems, fosters self-accountability, and increases engagement in learning.

In addition, we have adopted differentiated instruction that tailors lessons to meet each student’s individual needs or strengths. Our weekly D.I. sheet consists of tasks of different levels of difficulty. Children may attempt one or all of them, and they may do so in their free time or when they attend extra classes if they wish to avoid sitting through the same worksheet again. The tasks in each sheet are related to the grammatical concept(s), or vocabulary learnt in that lesson.

Confident Readers and Budding Writers

Learning English in Primary School can be challenging for many students. As they transition from kindergarten to formal schooling, there is a massive jump in standards. Supplementing them with English Tuition at this level can help these students ease into Primary 1 and help them build a strong foundation. Our students learn through colourful worksheets, games, and group activities during English Tuition lessons. This helps them relate the language to real life, learn simple grammar rules easily through play, and develop essential reading and comprehension skills.

Primary 2 students continue building on the basics of the English language while expanding their vocabulary and learning new concepts. They learn more complex sentence structures and pick up new skills. Attending English Tuition at The Edu Experience helps students reinforce grammatical knowledge and allows them to practise and refresh topics learnt. This is key as they will need a strong foundation when they advance to upper primary levels.

Primary 5-6 English

Along the road to PSLE excellence, our students strengthen their mastery over language skills with a key focus on exam-specific answering techniques.

Students learn through:

  • PSLE-format practices and timed-trials for revision
  • Intensive grammar and vocabulary practices
  • Regular guided writing practices
  • Oral and listening comprehension mock practices
  • Monthly tests to identify learning needs

Strong communicators and independent readers

Primary 5 & 6 are the most crucial years for primary school students as examinations for all subjects start getting more challenging with a significant jump in difficulty and the introduction of more higher-order questions. Our Primary 5 students fortify knowledge learnt while refining their writing skills in preparation for PSLE. We aim to identify their learning gaps so that we can bridge those gaps and ensure that our students are well prepared for Primary 6. Strong communication and writing skills will also pave the way for a child’s success that stretches beyond their primary school education, enabling them to excel in life.

By Primary 6, students should be familiar with all the grammatical concepts learnt in previous years, have strong oracy skills and be able to craft strong, well-written stories on their own in English. Our worksheets provide intensive revision of key concepts and regular practice so that students retain as much knowledge as possible and are well prepared for PSLE. Students also sit for mock tests under simulated examination conditions to help them hone time management skills so that they are sufficiently prepared for PSLE.
